In 1996, the literary organisation Chalapatha honoured Basanta Kumari Samanta at its State-Level Writers' Conference (Rajya Stariya Lekhaka Sammilani), held in connection with the Sri Gopal Kanungo Swarna Utsav. The felicitation recognized her as both a painter and a published Odia writer from Khallikote, an early instance in a long run of literary honours that would follow her painting career for decades to come.
